INDUSTRY WATCH | HYDROPOWER & ENERGY STORAGE

India is expanding its use of pumped-storage hydropower - a way to store energy using water.

According to the figures reported by NBM&CW, 11 projects with a combined capacity of 15,870 MW are under construction, with six additional projects awaiting commencement. The projects are expected to become operational between 2026 and 2032.

How does a water battery work?

Pumped Storage Hydropower in India-

Pumped storage hydropower pumps water to an upper reservoir when electricity is available.

Pump: Use electricity to move water uphill into a reservoir.

Water flows downhill through turbines in a pumped storage hydropower plant to release stored energy.

Store: Keep the water at a higher elevation until electricity is needed.

Hydropower turbines drive generators to convert flowing water into electricity.

Generate: Release the water downhill through turbines to produce electricity.

Why does this matter?

Building these projects requires specialised equipment, capable manufacturing partners and coordinated procurement.

Identifying and qualifying suppliers early can help project developers manage sourcing risks and keep equipment delivery aligned with construction schedules.

The takeaway: As India's energy-storage infrastructure expands, supplier capability and equipment readiness become important parts of project execution.

Turning project demand into supply-chain readiness

How SCM Connexions Can Help

India’s growing pumped-storage pipeline creates opportunities for manufacturers while increasing the importance of early supplier identification, manufacturing feasibility and cost visibility. SCM Connexions helps businesses assess manufacturing capabilities, develop qualified supplier networks, evaluate component-level costs and validate production readiness. By addressing these factors early, we aim to help project stakeholders reduce supply-chain uncertainty and build more reliable paths from project planning to production.
